Thank You

Disagreements between dogs happen — especially at off-leash dog parks. While it’s important to do everything possible to prevent fights, accidents can still occur. Knowing how to respond calmly and effectively can protect your dog and help prevent future incidents.
If you are ever uncomfortable with walking your dog off leash The Beast Boutique offers daily enriching off-leash adventures.
Step 1: Stay Calm
Your dog looks to you for cues. If you remain calm, your dog is more likely to regulate their own behavior. Take a deep breath and focus on attending to your dog before discussing the incident with the other dog owner. Avoid swearing and screaming at the other owner. They are probably just as surprised and concerned as your. Work together to solve the problem.
Step 2: Check for Injuries
Carefully run your hands over your dog’s body, brushing against the grain of their fur. Check your hands frequently for blood. Some injuries, especially on thick or long coats, can remain hidden — and delays in treatment can lead to infection or complications.
Step 3: Assess Minor Wounds
If the punctures are small and the skin isn’t torn or stretched, you can usually treat the wound at home:
Trim hair around the area with scissors or clippers
Wash thoroughly with mild soap and plenty of water
Use a cone or similar device to prevent licking
Step 4: Seek Veterinary Care for Serious Wounds
If the wound is deep, or if skin and underlying tissue have been pulled, a vet visit is necessary. Professional care ensures proper healing and reduces the risk of infection.
Step 5: Remove Your Dog from the Park
Even if no serious injuries are visible, leash your dog and remove them from the park immediately. After a fight, adrenaline can stay elevated for 24–48 hours. During this time, keep your dog calm at home and on leash when outside to avoid further stress or unwanted behavior.
Step 6: Learn Pet First Aid
Consider registering for a pet first aid course. Knowing how to handle wounds, choking, or other emergencies can save lives and reduce panic in stressful situations.
Step 7: Prevent Future Fights
Taking proactive steps can reduce the chance of future altercations:
Observe body language: Watch for signs of stress, fear, or overstimulation before it escalates
Separate dogs as needed: Don’t force interactions; allow shy or reactive dogs space
Use proper introductions: Introduce new dogs on leash in a neutral space
Know your dog’s limits: Some dogs do better in small groups or calmer environments
A dog fight can be stressful for both dogs and owners, but staying calm, checking for injuries, and taking preventative measures can keep your dog safe and confident.
