Tame the Little Beast
Puppy training classes lay the foundation for a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted relationship between you and your furry friend. Here’s why they’re so important:
Socialization: Puppies learn to interact with other dogs, people, and new environments in a controlled, positive setting, helping them develop confidence and reduce fear or aggression later in life.
Basic Commands: Training classes teach essential skills like "sit," "stay," and "come," which are crucial for your dog’s safety and good manners at home and in public.
Behavior Management: Early training addresses common challenges like nipping, barking, and jumping, ensuring these behaviors don’t become habits.
Bond Building: Training strengthens the bond between you and your puppy, teaching them to look to you for guidance and establishing trust.
Foundation for Advanced Training: A well-trained puppy is more likely to succeed in advanced training, agility, or therapy work in the future. Investing time in a puppy training class sets your dog up for a lifetime of success. It’s more than just obedience—it’s about building a partnership that will last for years to come.

Scent Detection - Making a difference, one sniff at a time Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources in the world. However, research shows that wind turbines cause hundreds of thousands of bird and bat fatalities annually. Scent detection dogs help teams of scientists find ways to reduce the environmental impact of wind energy. Detection dogs use their keen sense of smell to search large areas faster and more efficiently than human eyesight. They help evaluate whether curtailment strategies work, especially for threatened species. For example, they help compare fatalities when wind turbines only run at higher wind speeds vs lower speeds. In this class, you’ll learn how to motivate your dog to find scent using the same techniques as professional detection dogs from scent detection expert Dr. Carla Simon. Many handlers report that scent detection helps their dog to focus better, provides mental and physical exercise, builds confidence, and develops a stronger bond.

Medical Alert Training Seminars for service dogs, service dogs in training, and trainers
Train your dog to alert to symptoms of diabetes, migraines, epilepsy, or food allergies before they become a medical emergency
Seminar dates
HH08 November 23, 2024
HH09 January 18, 2025
HH10 February 22, 2025
All levels and ages are welcome! We will tailor the training to your experience level. Your dog does not need to be a service dog yet. Certified teams are welcome. Brand new teams can try the first steps of introducing scent. No previous experience is required. Puppies welcome and encouraged to join.
Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to start training medical alerts. Carla will show you exactly what to do, using rewards-based scent detection protocols that have already worked for thousands of students. About: https://scentdetection.huntersheart.com/about_hunters_heart_scent_detection_classes_calgary To get started we will provide a palm-sized piece of rubber placemat to begin training the scent detection behaviour. Once proficient, you will pair that object with your saliva sample. Ask for details on how to collect the samples properly. Experienced teams test your skills with double-blind tests on the daisy wheel. Get answers to your questions in a supportive environment. Learn how to handle when you feel uncertain. Carla will suggest the next steps for training your medical alert dog. Dogs must always be on leash and under control, as expected for service dogs. No dog-dog interaction is ever allowed. Do not allow your dog to sniff or greet other dogs. Only one dog will work at a time. Your dog can wait for their turn by lying quietly at your feet. Please bring a crate or bed. (Sorry, barking dogs cannot wait in the seminar room, since they make it difficult for other teams to learn. If your dog is barking and disturbing the other students, you can bring a helper to wait with your dog in your vehicle between turns. Talk to us if you have any concerns. Other options include crating in an adjacent room.)
