From Scent Training to Wildlife Conservation: Holly and Penny's Success Story
At The Beast Boutique, we love seeing where a dog's training journey can lead. Holly Kinas and her canine partner, Penny, are an inspiring example of how specialized education, consistent training, and a passion for dogs can come together to make a meaningful difference.
Featured in the Miistakis Institute's 2025–2026 Annual Report, Holly and Penny are involved in Frog Dog, a wildlife conservation project using detection dogs to help locate northern leopard frog egg masses. This work supports efforts to monitor and protect an important species in Alberta and British Columbia.
Building the Skills for Specialized Detection Work
Working as a wildlife conservation detection dog trainer requires more than an understanding of a dog's extraordinary sense of smell. It involves learning how to develop reliable detection skills, build clear communication between dog and handler, and prepare teams for the challenges of real-world fieldwork.
Holly completed Hunter’s Heart intensive two-day Specialist Wildlife Conservation Detection Dog Trainer Certification, followed by more than a year of weekly scent detection classes with Dr. Carla Simon.
This combination of specialized education and ongoing practical training helped Holly continue developing her knowledge and skills in scent detection.
From the Classroom to Conservation
The skills involved in scent detection have applications far beyond traditional dog sports. Specially trained dogs can assist with wildlife research, environmental monitoring, and conservation initiatives by locating odours that would otherwise be difficult for people to detect.
Holly and Penny's work with the Frog Dog project is an exciting example of this potential. Their efforts demonstrate how dedicated handlers and their canine partners can apply specialized training to real-world conservation challenges.

Celebrating Holly and Penny
Hunter's Heart Scent Detection Dogs and The Beast Boutique are proud that Holly chose our Specialist Wildlife Conservation Detection Dog Trainer Certification as part of her professional development. We are equally pleased to recognize the dedication she has shown through more than a year of weekly scent detection classes with Dr. Carla Simon.
Achievements like this remind us why we are passionate about dog training. Training is not simply about teaching a dog a skill; it is about developing knowledge, building teamwork, and discovering what dogs and their handlers can accomplish together.
Congratulations to Holly and Penny on their important work. We look forward to following their continued journey and seeing how their skills contribute to wildlife conservation.
