Learn why handling tolerance is an essential life skill for dogs and how training builds confidence and safety.
We love our dogs—and we want them to feel safe and comfortable in the world. Part of that responsibility is teaching them that being handled by people other than their family is a normal part of life.
Groomers, veterinarians, daycare staff, trainers and pet sitters all work with dogs who may be nervous, uncomfortable or simply unsure about being touched by a stranger. Even the friendliest dog can react differently when someone they don't know touches their ears, paws, face, body or collar. For professionals working with dogs, this can create real safety risks. A dog who has never learned to tolerate handling may growl, snap, bite, struggle or panic—not because they are "bad," but because they are communicating that they are uncomfortable.
Handling is a life skill and your dog should gradually learn to be comfortable with things like:
Having their paws, ears and mouth handled
Being touched and examined by unfamiliar people
Standing calmly while someone brushes or examines them
Being restrained gently when necessary
Having someone other than their family put on a collar, harness or leash
Remaining calm in unfamiliar environments
