About the Program

The Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) program is designed to promote responsible dog ownership and ensure that dogs are well-mannered members of the community. It is open to all dogs, pure bred or mixed breed, if they are at least 12 months old, in good health, and up to date on vaccinations. The program emphasizes the relationship between the dog and handler, assessing the handler’s ability to control the dog in real-life situations rather than precision obedience.

The CGN program focuses on 12 exercises simulating everyday scenarios, including:

Accepting a Friendly Stranger – Dog remains calm when approached by a stranger.
Politely Accepts Petting – Dog allows gentle petting without fear or aggression.
Appearance and Grooming – Dog tolerates basic grooming and inspection.
Out for a Walk – Demonstrates loose-leash walking and handler control.
Walking Through a Crowd – Dog remains calm in pedestrian traffic.
Sit/Down on Command and Stay – Dog responds to commands and stays in place.
Come When Called – Dog reliably returns when called.
Praise/Interaction – Dog calms quickly after play or praise.
Reaction to Passing Dog – Dog behaves politely around other dogs.
Reaction to Distractions – Dog remains composed amid sudden noises or movements.
Supervised Isolation – Dog stays calm when left with a stranger for a short period.
Walking Through a Door/Gate – Dog follows handler calmly through entrances .
