How to Maintain Your Dog’s Coat Between Grooming Appointments

October 20, 2026•5 min read

A beautiful groom doesn’t end when your dog leaves the grooming table. What you do at home between appointments plays an important role in keeping your dog’s coat healthy, comfortable, and looking its best.

Regular brushing helps prevent mats and tangles, protects coat condition, and makes it easier to maintain your dog’s preferred style. But brushing isn’t as simple as running a brush over your dog’s back a few times a week. Different coat types require different tools, techniques, and levels of maintenance.

The good news? With the right knowledge and a little practice, you can make home coat care more effective and comfortable for your dog.

Why Is Brushing Between Grooms So Important?

Regular coat maintenance offers several benefits for your dog.

1. Prevents painful matting

Mats develop when loose hair, dirt, and tangles become trapped in the coat. If left unattended, they can tighten against the skin, causing discomfort and potentially leading to skin irritation. Areas such as behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and between the toes are particularly prone to tangling.

2. Helps maintain your dog’s preferred style

If you love keeping your dog’s coat longer, consistent home maintenance is essential. When matting becomes too extensive, your groomer may have no choice but to shorten the coat for your dog’s comfort and safety.

3. Keeps grooming appointments more comfortable

A well-maintained coat is generally easier to brush, bathe, dry, and style. Preventing tangles at home can help reduce the discomfort associated with removing mats during a professional grooming appointment.

4. Helps you spot potential problems

Brushing gives you an opportunity to check your dog’s skin and coat regularly. You may notice unusual lumps, redness, irritation, parasites, or changes in coat condition that deserve further attention.

Not Every Coat Should Be Brushed the Same Way

One of the most common mistakes dog owners make is assuming that the same brushing technique works for every dog.

In reality, coat type makes a big difference.

  • Curly coats: Poodles and many Poodle-crosses often need frequent, thorough brushing and combing to prevent tangles from developing close to the skin.

  • Double coats: Breeds with thick undercoats may need tools and techniques designed to remove loose undercoat without unnecessarily damaging the outer coat.

  • Long, flowing coats: Dogs with drop coats often need gentle, systematic brushing to prevent tangles along the body, ears, legs, and tail.

  • Sporting coats: These coats may require a combination of brushing, combing, and coat-specific maintenance to keep them in good condition.

  • Combination coats: Dogs with different textures and lengths across their bodies may need more than one tool or technique.

Understanding your dog’s individual coat is the first step toward choosing the right approach.

What Is Line Brushing, and Why Does It Matter?

If your dog has a longer or dense coat, you may have heard your groomer mention line brushing.

Rather than brushing only the surface, line brushing involves working through the coat in small sections. You gently separate the hair, brush a section from the skin outward, and gradually move through the coat until you have covered the entire area.

Why is this important? Brushing only the top layer can leave tangles hidden underneath. Your dog may look beautifully brushed on the surface while mats continue to develop closer to the skin.

A metal comb can be useful for checking your work, provided it is suitable for your dog’s coat. It should pass through the coat without catching or pulling. Never force a comb through a tangle, as this can cause discomfort.

If you encounter tight mats, avoid cutting them out with scissors. Mats can sit close to the skin, making accidental injuries surprisingly easy. Ask your groomer for advice instead.

Where Should You Pay Extra Attention?

Some areas are more prone to matting than others. When brushing your dog at home, pay particular attention to:

  • Behind and underneath the ears

  • Under the front legs and around the armpits

  • The chest and belly

  • Around the collar or harness

  • The backs of the legs

  • The tail and areas where the coat rubs together

Take your time, use gentle handling, and give your dog breaks when needed. If brushing causes discomfort or your dog becomes distressed, stop and speak with your groomer about a more comfortable approach.

How Often Should You Brush Your Dog?

There is no single brushing schedule that works for every dog. The ideal frequency depends on coat type, coat length, lifestyle, and how quickly tangles develop.

Dogs with curly or longer coats may need daily attention, while some short-coated dogs require much less brushing. Your groomer can help you determine a realistic routine based on your dog’s specific needs.

The most important thing is consistency. Short, regular brushing sessions are often easier for both you and your dog than trying to work through a week’s worth of tangles in one sitting.
