What a smelly and stressful situation this can be—for both you and your dog! The good news is that in many cases, you can deal with a skunk encounter at home. However, if your dog has been sprayed directly in the eyes or mouth, or is showing concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

Thoroughly Check Your Dog

Start by checking your dog's eyes, mouth and face. If the spray hit these areas directly, contact your veterinarian.

Watch for excessive drooling, vomiting, significant eye redness or swelling, weakness, difficulty breathing or unusual behaviour. These can be signs that your dog needs veterinary attention.

Keep Your Dog Outside

Resist the temptation to bring your dog straight into the house or bathtub. Skunk spray is oily and can spread to carpets, furniture, clothing and towels.

If possible, keep your dog outside while you gather what you need to clean them. Put on old clothes and gloves before you begin.

Skip the Tomato Juice!

Tomato juice doesn't neutralize skunk spray, and vinegar isn't an effective solution either. Regular dog shampoo alone generally won't break down the compounds responsible for the smell.

Use a Skunk-Specific Deodorizer

It's a good idea to keep a commercial skunk-odor remover on hand, especially if you live in an area where skunks are common.

If you don't have a commercial product available, a freshly mixed solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a small amount of dish soap is a commonly recommended home treatment. The peroxide mixture should never be used around the eyes or mouth, can lighten dark fur, and should be mixed fresh and never stored.

Wash, Rinse and Repeat

Thoroughly work the commercial skunk-odor remover into the sprayed areas according to the product instructions, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary.

Once the skunk odor has been treated, you can follow up with your regular dog shampoo and rinse well. Dry your dog thoroughly and keep them somewhere warm and comfortable.

When Should You Call the Vet?

Contact your veterinarian if the spray gets into your dog's eyes or mouth, your dog has been bitten by the skunk, or they develop difficulty breathing, vomiting, severe lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite or other concerning symptoms.

Rarely, significant skunk exposure can cause red blood cell damage and anemia, so dogs should be monitored following a heavy exposure.

Prevention Is Key

• Be particularly cautious around dawn and dusk, when skunks are often most active.

• Keep garbage and pet food securely stored.

• Don't allow your dog to investigate holes, brush piles or areas underneath decks.

• Keep your dog's vaccinations current, particularly because skunks can carry rabies.
